The Toy Nest, the Washington area’s only toy lending library, will be collecting excess Halloween candy in exchange for toys. All candy will be donated to the Falls Church Public Works Operations Department, the public servants who collect leaves, plow snow, clean up after storms, and maintain City vehicles and infrastructure.
To participate, families should drop off unopened candy from Friday, November 1 through Saturday, November 9 at The Toy Nest during business hours. For every pound of candy brought, children can borrow one point of toys (valued at $15-20 per point). Non-members keep the toys for one week and Toy Nest members keep them for two weeks. Full details are available online at www.thetoynest.com/events-and-classes.
The Toy Nest offers onsite play, take-home borrowing, online toy reservation and curbside pickup of over 1600 sanitized toys, Halloween costumes, ride-ons, games, LEGOs and puzzles for all ages. Depending on membership type, items can be checked out for one or two weeks and renewed twice. Memberships, play bookings, online catalog, gift cards and party bookings are available at www.thetoynest.com. The Toy Nest also donates scholarship memberships to local qualifying families.
Toy libraries foster family connection and play-based learning while reducing expenses, waste, clutter and environmental impact. They have a long history in the United States, dating back to the Great Depression, and are popular in other parts of the country and the world.
The Toy Nest is located in downtown Falls Church at 125 N. Washington Street, open Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 to 6:00 and Friday through Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00.
